Cookie Monstaz: Recce Report

A2 Media Studies: Annotation of Poster - Joshua

This is the poster for the romantic comedy-spoof Shaun of The Dead. Immediately you notice that the title plays on the film Dawn of The Dead. From this the poster tells us that the film could be a parody of the same film. The only elements of romance in the poster is the fact that he is holding flowers which he most likely wants to give to a girl. This could also symbolise a confession of apology, so he could be facing romance struggles. The main character dubbed ‘Shaun’ from the title dresses sophisticated from what we can see; he is wearing a pressed white shirt and a red tie. This could be the casual uniform for his job. Shaun is also wearing a black jacket which shows his social class of being a mature adult (clothes can show the type of person).
This character is the only coloured person on the poster, the others look dead. His flowers even contribute to the glow this could symbolise life while the zombies obviously symbolise death so we can tell that he might be a hero on some lines. The tagline also contributes to his facial expression. ‘Ever felt like you were surrounded by zombies,’ this in a sense puts the audience in the same position as Shaun because it seems like he’s just realising that there are zombies, this makes the audience think the same thing. Since the zombies are all casual people the notion in the description of Zombies could be referring to society of going to work and people doing the same thing. This can be supported by the fact that they are all on a train because in theory, Zombies don’t have the concept of this.
The train is also cramped just like if a person was going to work. Also because they are on a train there’s a possibility that the zombies could have infiltrated other common areas. We don’t seem to realise how close the main character is to death at this point because they aren’t focusing on him. In fact the zombies are facing us with all different emotions which tells us that we are the target not Shaun. But the idea of them being on a train and the doors are locked shows how they can’t get us, but if we watch the movie they might. The doors also have colour and are red which could mean blood.
