Poster Analysis - Scary Movie

As we can see the image t the front of this poster is all the main characters sitting in cinema watching a horror film. We can tell that it is a horror film from the characters facial expressions which looked shocked, scared and worried. Just by looking at the characters we can see that the majority of them are famous actors and actresses. This would also be the main synergy of the film as the main character who is not as famous is not on the front of the poster. The tagline for this film is printed clearly at the top of the poster saying ‘No mercy. No shame. No sequel’ the tagline clearly states what the film is about. ‘No mercy’ stating that the murderer in this film will not have any mercy for his victims. ‘No shame’ stating that some parts of the film are explicit and rude. ‘No sequel’ shows the audience that there is no hope for some of the characters, no part two or extra life. We can se that this film has taken a lot of information from other horror movies. A parody element has been used on the poster. The t-shirt that one of the men is holding up says ‘I SEE DEAD PEOPLE’. This was a quote taken from the 1999 film ‘The Sixth Sense’.
Another parody element taken from a horror film is the lady holding the telephone shows that she is having a conversation similar to the one in the film. We can tell that she is talking to similar to the one in the 1996 film ‘Scream’. We can tell that the murderer next to her is getting close which can be taken as a joke as he is flirting with her in a cinema which is not what murderers do. The title is clearly printed at the bottom saying ‘Scary Movie’ this is a contradiction as the movie isn't scary but it is funny. they writers have given this film the name Scary Movie as this particular movie follows the storyline of the 1996 film Scream but it adds a large amount of comedy to show that the movie is a parody.
You can see that this film is a parody from the mask that one of the characters is wearing which is taken ‘Scream’. The mask has been altered to make it look like he is smiling whereas the original mask has a very long stretched mouth. We can also tell it’s a parody as a murderer wouldn't be wearing that mask whilst watching a movie and eating popcorn. The target audience for this film is not printed on the poster (certificate) however from the characters dress codes and location we can establish that they are teenagers.
